John Hyde

“The Apostle of Prayer”

🌿 Early Life

John Hyde was born in a small town called Carleton in the state of Illinois, USA, on November 9, 1865. His parents were deeply spiritual and prayerful. Their home was always filled with the presence of God through prayer. From childhood, John learned to walk in faith and discipline.

Inspired by his mother’s prayer life and his father’s sermons, John developed a desire to become a missionary. After finishing his studies, he worked for a short time as a teacher.

One evening, he attended a meeting for those preparing for foreign missions. A sermon by Henrik Johnson touched his heart deeply. There, he surrendered his life to God and prayed,
“Lord, send me anywhere You wish; I am ready.”
From that moment, he started preparing himself for missionary service.

✝️ Missionary Work in India

In 1892, John Hyde came to India as a missionary. Because he was physically weak, soft-spoken, and shy, many people thought he was not fit to be a missionary. He was slow in speech and not energetic in appearance.

But John Hyde had something very powerful — the gift of prayer.
He may not have been strong in body or speech, but he was mighty on his knees. He often prayed for many hours without stopping. His trousers were torn at the knees from constant kneeling in prayer.

He became known as “Praying Hyde,” a man who brought heaven’s power down through prayer.

🔥 Revival Meetings

Once, during a revival meeting in Sialkot, Punjab, John Hyde spent 21 days in fasting and prayer before the event. He prayed earnestly for the salvation of souls and for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

When he finally spoke at the meeting, he preached only 15 minutes — yet, the presence of God was so powerful that people began to weep, confess their sins, and turn to God in repentance.

Many testified later,
“His sermon was short, but his prayer was deep.”

🙇‍♂️ A Life of Prayer

John Hyde prayed daily, saying,
“Lord, give me one soul today.”
God answered his prayer — every day at least one person came to Christ. Later he prayed,
“Lord, give me five souls each day,”
and God again granted his request.

Through his deep intercession, thousands of people in India experienced repentance and salvation. He spent 19 years in India as a missionary, winning souls not by long sermons but by powerful prayer.

🌸 Final Days

Even in his final days, when he was too weak to stand, he prayed from his bed. His body was frail, but his spirit burned with love for souls.

On February 17, 1912, at the age of 47, John Hyde peacefully went to be with the Lord whom he loved and served.

💬 Short Thought

Fortunatus Henri Caumont

Fortunatus Henri Caumont was a devoted French missionary who served God faithfully in Rajasthan, India. He was born on 10th December 1871 in Tours, France, and from childhood, he had a deep love for God and a strong desire to serve Him. Sadly, he lost his father at a young age, and the responsibility of supporting his family fell on him. Even in hardship, Henri remained calm, worked hard, and cared for his loved ones.

However, the call of God in his heart grew stronger, and he finally decided to give his life completely to God’s service. He received his ministerial training, was ordained in 1896, and a year later, he was sent to Rajputana Mission, India, to spread the Gospel.

When Henri arrived in Rajasthan, he was deeply moved by the spiritual and physical emptiness of the people. He believed that mothers are the first teachers of faith, and if women are taught about the true God, they can guide their children toward a life of faith.

But during that time, the purdah system in India did not allow men to speak to women freely. Henri realized that only women could reach other women. With this vision, he started a women’s religious congregation called “Prabhudasi Sisters” (Handmaids of the Lord) in Ajmer in 1906. Through this mission, many women across Rajasthan and North India heard about the love of Jesus Christ.

Henri also noticed that while boys in Rajasthan received education, girls had very few opportunities. To change this, he founded another group called the “Mission Sisters of Ajmer,” which focused on educating girls. Over time, the schools he started became some of the best and most respected educational institutions in Rajasthan.

Henri was a passionate and tireless missionary. He continued to preach and travel even when his health was weak. During one of his journeys to Jabhua, Madhya Pradesh, his strength failed. On 4th April 1930, he peacefully passed away, saying his final words:
“Jesus, I love You without reserve. Amen.”

George Walker Jackson

Missionary of the Disciples of Christ

George Walker Jackson was a devoted missionary from the Disciples of Christ organization who came to India in 1880. He began his ministry by traveling through the villages around Benares and Jubbulpore (Jabalpur), preaching the Gospel. Later, he moved to Bilaspur, where he continued his evangelistic work in Harda and nearby areas.

Biography

During the early years of his service, Jackson went through many spiritual and emotional struggles, but the grace of God strengthened and guided him throughout his journey.

After a short return to England, he came back to India in 1885 and began serving again in Bilaspur and nearby villages. In 1886, he married Isabelle Anderson, who became a faithful and loving partner in his ministry.

Ministry in India

George and Isabelle together moved to Mungeli, where they set up a mission station. Jackson faithfully preached the Gospel in the town’s main street, sharing the message of Christ with anyone who stopped to listen. His preaching was simple, clear, and heartfelt. He also conducted Sunday classes for children and Bible studies for young men.

Isabelle worked among the women, visiting their homes to share the Word of God. In 1890, she opened a small dispensary to provide basic medical help to the local and tribal people. She was also gifted in music and used her talent to assist in church worship and services.

Jackson is especially remembered for his ministry among the Satnamis, a tribal community that was often looked down upon and lived without any organized religion. With great courage and love, Jackson reached out to them, sharing the message of Jesus and leading many to faith.

Though he often suffered from poor health, Jackson never gave up his calling. Each time he recovered, he returned to the mission field with renewed strength and faith.

In 1891, George and Isabelle went back to England, where he continued preaching and encouraging others to support missionary work. He remained faithful to God’s calling until he was called to his heavenly home in 1924.

William Carey

Life and Ministry

Service and Achievements

William Carey is known as the “Father of Modern Missions.”
He translated the Bible into many Indian languages and was the first person to establish a printing press in India to print the Holy Bible.

He dedicated his life to God’s service in 1779, and on November 11, 1793, he arrived in Calcutta (Kolkata), India by ship to begin his missionary work.

Carey faced many struggles and hardships in his ministry. At one time, all the Bible manuscripts ready for printing were destroyed by fire, but he did not lose heart — he translated and printed them again.

The East India Company worked against him, and even some Christian groups and his own family did not support him in the beginning. During the first seven years of his mission work, not a single person accepted Christ, yet he never gave up.

Over 41 years of ministry in India, William Carey translated and printed the entire Bible in 24 languages and the New Testament in about 40 languages.

He suffered many personal losses — his son died, his wife passed away, some of his close friends died, and he even lost one of his legs, but he never stopped serving God.
